Review: Villariny Salsa Project “Amigo Es Un Peso En El Bolsillo”

2011 was a banner and rebound year for salsa, and 2012 is shaping up to be even better.  While many pundits will have you believe that salsa is on life support, we at NGS are here to tell you otherwise.  Many new salsa bands have stepped forward ushering in the next generation of Salseros.  One such band out of Puerto Rico is the Villariny Salsa Project.

The Villariny name is no stranger to salsa music enthusiasts. Tommy Villariny, a veteran first-call trumpet player, producer and arranger has worked with some of the best names in the business.  Oscar Villariny, a percussionist, trumpet player and singer now leads the charge with the release of En Tu Tiempo, his debut album, which I consider one of the best CD’s of 2011.  The entire production has a fresh new sound, and you know from the first to the last beat that these are seasoned professionals laying down some swinging arrangements and catchy lyrics.

Some of the best tracks on the projects are, “A Punto De Caramelo,” “Estoy Enamorao,” and “Quien Bien Me Va”, which are all dance floor favorites and must haves for your music library.  My personal favorite is “Amigo Es Un Peso En El Bosillo”, which can be words to live by, for some.
