DJ Gury Gury

DJ Gury Gury discovered Salsa music while living and studying Spanish in La Habana, Cuba. ” I lived on the same street as the legendary “El Tosco” of NG la Banda, and would wake up every afternoon listening to the sounds of their rehearsal”, says Gury Gury.  This experience inspired him to become involved in the world of Latin music. After moving for a short while to his adopted country of Colombia, he received the name “Gury Gury” after a television show character, because his family had difficulty pronouncing Gary.

Gury discovered his passion as a DJ in his home basement during the early 80’s, where he would mix Duran Duran songs on a 2 track. In 1986, after forming the legendary Toronto Punk Rock label X Records, Gary began an internship on CHRY 105.5 FM out of York University. After numourous shows and promotions Gary X, as he was known then, became the station’s music director in 1989. He remained in that postion until 1994 when he gave up his show and other club DJing duties to travel the world.

Upon returning to Canada in 2001 the Salsa bug had bitten Gury.  After several years of researching the music, he decided to start a radio program called “Viejoteca”, on CFRU 93.3 FM.  Since then, Gury Gury has been asked to be the resident DJ at the E-Bar in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Spinning the first Wednesday of every month, his “Latin Fiesta” promotion at the E-Bar has been recognized as the premier Salsa night in the area by Echo Magazine.

In addition to DJ Gury Gury’s work in Ontario, he has also traveled the world playing music in locations such as, Colombia, England, Spain, Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, Rochester, Cleveland, New York, Chicago, Kitchener and London.  As a result, Gury Gury has become an internationally recognized DJ and continues to travel and play special events around the globe.

Gury Gury is recognized as the founder of the Salsa Ethica movement, and in September of 2006 Gury Gury launced his 24 hour online radio station on the Live365.com network.  In addition, Gury Gury has been responsible for bringing some great live music to the Guelph, Ontario region, including Bio Ritmo, Bryan Vargas, Cache, Son Ache, and Cassava.
